Policy Focus:

Racism and its opposite, antiracism, are lenses to understand so many other issues like Gun Violence, Immigration policy, affordable housing, the death penalty, criminal justice, etc. We list it as the first issue in our letter to the Bishops. In the words of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, “Racism is an evil which endures in our society and in our Church” (Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love – A Pastoral Letter Against Racism, 2018).

Racism permeates many instances of injustice in Florida. The 2022 Gerrymandering restricts the vote of African American and emboldened policies regarding voting procedures, education, and policing exacerbate their already disproportionate adversities on people of color. To compound matters, we are alarmed by the blatant rise of white supremacy and its assault on democracy in Florida and the state legislature. That trend is all the more alarming when it is cloaked under the guise of Christian Nationalism.

Some Background on the Issue
  • NAACP Florida Travel Advisory
The travel advisory comes in direct response to Governor Ron DeSantis’ aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools.
