YAOI Profile

Profile of the kind of person we are looking for:

Though we surely desire to be inclusive of all persons, we particularly want to identify young adults of the millennial generation ages 18-40 currently living in Florida, across diverse racial and ethnic identities

It is no easy task to outreach to young adults. It will be a challenge to get them on board. We must do that through PERSONAL INVITATION. Regardless of their religious practice, the young adults we seek demonstrate some form of social justice activism around one or more social justice “issue;” (i.e. Care of the Environment, racism, homelessness, etc.). They may fit one or more of the following descriptors:

  • They may or may not be practicing Catholics or Christians with a formal church affiliation;
  • If they identify as catholic or christian in another tradition, they may be on the “fringe;”
  • They may be so-called “nones” (no affiliation with institutional church); nonetheless, they may be “seekers” who hunger for personal growth and desire to be doers and makers of change for a better world;
  • They may find Pope Francis a refreshing change agent and source of spiritual inspiration;
  • They value the “inward journey” and a spirituality to ground their social activism;
  • They may hunger for a spiritual home (supportive faith community) that nurtures their commitment to peace and social justice in efforts to make the world a better place;
  • They may have been raised catholic, and though on the fringe of even outside the church, they may still value their catholic identity;

Some helpful resources and models for engaging young adults:

An initiative by women religious reaching out to “nones” by sharing their story with “seekers” and inviting them to the conversation.
